What do YOU really need EDC for?
Well, you saw the title. Its a simple, but annoying question - taking time to take a hard look at your kit and see if you really need said item.
As fun as it is to have a massive array of the latest gadgets, weight and space constraints soon will rear themselves in objection, and sooner or later you may find yourself leaving pieces of kit behind.
For example, as much as I enjoyed the Mora Eldris, I found that the shear bulk of the small fixed blade was uncomfortable to carry daily, and I loathed taking it around daily in a jean pocket carry.
The Mercator K55K solved literally of my problems with the Mora.
I could have avoided this entire situation all together if I had examined my needs before hand.
I have boiled this down to some simple, but helpful qualifiers for a new EDC item:
1.) Quality - Will this item stand the test of time, and can I abuse it for years and still have it function properly?
2.) Ahead of the curve = not always good!
I learned the hard way on this. As a avid flashlight aficionado, I alway am looking for the next light. I regreted this with the purchase of the original Olight S2 Baton, which was plagued with hardware problems. (Olights customer service is great though, and they replaced the light with another model!)
3) Multifunctional, but to a point!
The Swiss Champ is a prime example of this. Amazing functionality, but at a cost of weight, which makes it uncomfortable to EDC over long periods of time.
Hopefully this simple list of qualifiers with help you in picking your next EDC kit item -
Until then, stay safe and have fun!
